The creature's greatest need is to be needed. After Viktor disowns him the creature walks the countryside. He is chased, mocked, loathed and attacked. One of the biggest themes is the monster's loneliness in a world which refuses to look any deeper for goodness. At one point the creature demands that Viktor create a mate for him. The creature wants what any human wants; he longs to be loved.
