Light symbolizes knowledge in the world of Shelley. Light means a sense of discovery and enlightenment which initially is a good thing. Walton views the light of the far North as eternal and full of hope, “What could not be expected in the country of eternal light?” Similarly Victor is full of the light of knowledge before embarking on his ultimate "science experiment"? The light darkens, ebbs and flows as the novel goes on. The alps are bright white as Victor feels far from his monster. The forests are dark as Victor feels close to his monster.
