Beaufort was a man who the narrator had known who was respected and distinguished but fell into poverty,

"I cannot refrain from relating them. One of his most intimate friends was a merchant, who, from a flourishing state, fell, through numerous mischances, into poverty. "

He moved to Lucerne and lived a very hard unfortunate life.
