How does Victor become a disenfranchised member of society himself?

In this section, Victor purposely banishes himself from society by isolating himself in the mountains. He's feeling a tremendous amount of guilt, and he's also feeling the need to distance himself from any other actions the creature might take (think murder). For whatever reason, Victor thinks his absence will either change the outcome of the future, or possibly he just hopes it will absolve him.
