How does this extract reveal characteristics of gothic literature?

I don't know if I see an example of gothic literature here as much as I see an example of romanticism. Walton writes his sister about a romantic journey, we see him (or he sees himself) as a hero, and the job he's set before himself has nothing to do with real knowledge and experience, but a desire born in reading books. He's an innocent......... and he wants (needs) a friend.
