Victor's conscience is weighed upon for much of the story. His attempts to play God do not work out the way he wanted. His abdication of responsibility for the creature turns into a painful existence. As the creature seeks revenge on his creator, Victor's conscience becomes increasingly damaged. The creature takes the lives of innocent people that Victor loves. This destroys Victor's conscience.
