Describe Safie's connection with the De Lacey family?

I know she is the daughter of a Turkish merchant, and is appalled by the fact that her father and Felix are endorsing women, but I don't quite understand her connection to the family.

Felix had helped Safie's father break out of jail when he was sentenced to death. In return, he was hoping to have his daughter's hand in marriage (Safie). The

De Laceys were forced to leave Paris and live in poverty because they tried to help Safie's father.
