Foxy Brown

Foxy Brown Analysis

Foxy Brown was one of the first movies starring an African-American strong woman. Foxy herself is fierce, knows what she wants and reaches for her goals no matter the cost. Instead of being the pretty housewife, she uses her femininity for her own good. For this, the movie has received a massive positive feedback, as it shows a woman that doesn’t look for love or a man to save her.

On the other side, Foxy has been described as an outlandish black woman, no matter how sexy or enticing she is. Many people meant that the movie was playing on stereotypes, where Foxy was headstrong and flashy. Why couldn’t she have been a calm and wise black woman, instead of a "masculine" one? Even though her character doesn’t play on the stereotype of women being helpless, it plays on the stereotype of race.

Nevertheless, the movie shows that someone’s destiny is in that person's own hands, but how far they will go depends on how many boundaries they are willing to break. Being able to expand on the story of a woman with both a good and a bad side is a talent and a blessing for the people that learn about how and why people act the way they do. The stereotypes might be too heavy, yet they do shed a light on an important topic.
