Ellis begins by examining the tension between these two men in order to make the reader understand the necessity of compromise. Our government was young and fragile, the tension between these two men symbolizes the tension between political parties (Federalists and Republicans). I've always believed their duel to be a result of refusal to compromise and an example of the fierce loyalty the founding brothers felt for the Union they'd fought to create.
