Why is this so sad?

Charlie, although he has made contact with his mother, has to accept that the "intelligent" side of himself is permanently disappearing. What he could have been to them had he been normal in intelligence is something he realizes for the briefest of moments and then he sees the end of his life as an intelligent being. This realization is most sad.
