Flowers for Algernon

What can we as reader figure out about Charlie that he doesn't seem to know himself? How do we know?

(At the first part of the the story Progress march 5, 1965 - Progress April 8)

From the start, the reader understands that the experiment is just that.... an experiment. We know that Charlie isn't failing the test, that he is passing them with flying colors, and that he is exactly what the doctors need for their research.
