In the first two prgress reports, we can easily infer that Charlie is severely, learning disabled. He seems nervous about failing, doesn't write very well, but has a desire to learn..... to be better. Thus, contrary to what many people believe, he is well aware of his disabilities and recognizes the reactions in others.
