These short stories were all testaments of Flannery's faith, enduring belief in the Catholic Church, and her desire to bring back the importance of such literature in the mainstream. She didn't want to write conventional novels, and she didn't want her name attached to low quality religious literature. What she wanted was for her readers was a depiction of grace. Her writing is filled with the presence of grace, and her characters are free to accept the gift or not......... she doesn't pass judgment on her characters either; that's something she leaves the reader to do on their own. Her purpose? To enlighten the reader and remind us of or religious roots and values.
