Joy is an angry, resentful individual, and although she's very bright, she doesn't do or act in a way that her mother believes is fitting. Mrs. Hopewell is hopeful. She wants to believe that her daughter will be both blessed and happy...... but she doesn;t see what her daughter wants as normal, and she deeply desires that her daughter aquire both husband and family.

Joy, on the other hand, could care less. She wants nothing to do with her mother's aspirations for her. In fact, she wants nothing more than to be as unlike her mother as humanly possible. She doesn;t believe in hope, God, or any type of spirituality. She's dead inside and wants to be left alone.
