Considering the story as a whole, why do you think Shiftlet starts telling the hitchhiker he picks up about his own mother? Why then does the boy react the way he does?

I think that Shiftlet feels guilty for abandoning Lucynell so he invents a story about his mother to draw the boy in with a comforting tale. The boy will have none of it and cries false on the man's story.
