Mattie boiled water to clean the coffeehouse, spent several hours cleaning, took a bath, and dressed in her mother's clothing. Then she woke her grandfather and gave him some soup, before continuing her cleaning. Afterward, she went out to the garden where she managed to dig up some potatoes for dinner. This was a "good day".

I sat next to Silas. It had been a good day, all things considered. I had managed rather well on my own. I opened Grandfather’s Bible. This is what it would be like when I had my own shop, or when I traveled abroad. I would always read before sleeping. One day, I’d be so rich I would have a library full of novels to choose from. But I would always end the evening with a Bible passage.
I turned to Psalm 4:8. “I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”
