Troy is pessimistic about Troy achieving his professional athletic aspirations while Rose thinks that Cory should follow his passions and his talent. Troy's cynicism comes from missing his own baseball goals because of racial segregation. Rose is much more pragmatic. She thinks that integration offers her son a whole new world.
