Farewell to Manzanar

To what extent are the changes Jeanne describes in her relationship with her parents similar to those that almost everyone experiences as they grow up?

To what extent are the changes she describes a result of the shame and humiliation of the years spent at Manzanar?

Like most teens, Jeanne wants to fit in. She is looking for her identity and feels caught between two cultures. Jeanne wants to keep parts of her Japanese culture while embracing parts of American culture. She has family and societal pressure to conform to one or the other. America wanted the Japanese to completely assimilate into American culture while Jeanne's father wanted his daughter to remain faithful to Japanese culture and traditions.
