How do the VC get past the ambush point undetected?

Th VC are hiding in the trees, Johnson is the last man in line. When Monaco spots a VC he fires a shot, as Johnson seems to have frozen in his tracks. The men have been traveling with newsmen. Possibly, they had been distracted by the extra bodies they had to defend. This section can be found on Pages 78 and 79.
