Montag comes to see the things that censorship can do. People no longer think for themselves and allow others to think for them. They do not question what they're told, but rather, accept what they government says without thought. Propaganda is spewed from radios and "walls", people have no connection because technology has displaced human contact and interaction with fantasy. As a result, he wants to protect knowledge (books) rather than burn them.
