Mildred can no longer handle Montag. He is much too evolved for her. She cannot handle Montag's poetry; she cannot handle his love of books; she cannot handle the fact that he wants to tear the world apart. Mildred's fragile psyche clings to the superficial status quo that the state supplies her.
