why did people lose interest in books?

It wasn't because of the loss of interest, but because of being conditioned to fear books. Like society today, you're shunned for being different and owning a book was just that. The firemen's mission was the burn books and knowledge and after appearing numerous times in front of the citizens, they know the result/fate that awaits them for owning one.
