Clarisse tells Montag that people in society don't look at details: they don't "stop and smell the flowers". Most people go through life blindly. They are concerned with meaningless things like parlor walls, or the races while chosing to remain ignorant to beauty of the moment. They fail to notice the sky or a flower or shade from a tree.
