What do the “firemen” do for a living? Why is this ironic

The firemen start fires on the houses that people who have books live in. This is to destroy the book. It is ironic because in our society reading is encouraged and firemen put out fires and in theirs it is the opposite if you are found with a book they take you to a mental hospital and burn your books.
