In context, Fahrenheit 451 presents a society in which family and friends are secondary to technology. Mildred would rather spend time with the "walls" than with her husband, her time spent with her friends revolves around what they're watching on the walls, and Montag admits to not even really knowing his wife anymore. The couple exists in the same house, but they no longer "know" each other.
