Montag's meeting with Clarisse was the major catalyst for change in his life. Montag goes from burning books to coveting them. Clarisse helps Montag discover that he has been leading a superficial vacuous life. His only hope was to discover the wisdom found in books. With the help of Faber, Winston undergoes a metamorphosis. He sees the utter and complete beauty in works like the Bible and Shakespeare. Books become Montag's refuge instead of contraband items to destroy.
