After Montag's life-changing moments with Clarrise, he walks into his house:

"It was like coming into the cold marbled room of a mausoleum after the moon has set. Complete darkness, not a hint of the silver world outside, the windows tightly shut, the chamber a tomb world where no sound from the great city could penetrate. The room was not empty."

Mildred has overdosed on sleeping pills. In the morning Mildred is oblivious to the fact she could have died the night before. She moves around the house in her usual vacuous state of self-denial about the pathetic superficial life she leads.
