The irony is that Beatty feels a similar reverence for books as Montag does. Beatty’s ideology, however, does not permit him to acknowledge his love. Consequently, Beatty is torn apart by his conflicted emotions. Beatty explains to Montag that people were becoming too sensitive and involved with politics and literature. Governments found it hard to control people with education and independent thought. Society would take away everything that caused strife and anxiety with the aim of forming a peaceful yet ignorant society, void of conflict or meaning.
