what dose guy mean when he says that they (people in general) "had to stop burning"?

What were they "burning"? How was it hurting there society?

The burning of books had to stop because it was destroying what knowledge was left in society. Society was left as nothing more than a wasteland of useless information and intellectual suicide. The burning had to stop and someone must begin to save humanity, through books, again.
