Initially he thinks it is a pretty good job, but once he meets Clarice and she tells him some of her philosophy, he begins to see things very differently.  He does not like destroying books once he has read some of the ones he has stolen.

Initially he liked his job. Burning books was a prestigious job. He liked the smell of smoke and kerosene. He enjoyed setting books on fire. Of course this changes after his enlightenment with Clarisse.
