Society needed to believe that the guilty man had been apprehended and killed. Thus, the people had nothing to worry about.... as usual.

While escaping after killing Beatty, Montag is almost hit by a car, sees himself on the news, changes his clothing, and watches Faber's house as it's burned to the ground.
