The Wanderer is a melancholy soul. He grieves over the loss of his lord and searches for wisdom and security through his Christian faith. In the text we see the Wanderer cope with the loss of his lord, and we experience his past. Where he was once a loyal, happy member of the lord's retinue and member of a loving family; he now is a lost soul in search of all that he has lost.
