Roth uses the narrator’s tone, which is both pointed and melancholy to describe everyman. His tone is not only melancholic.... it is sympathetic to the everyman’s experiences.... the aging, medical conditions, feelings of loneliness, and ultimitely..... death. The tone is also nostalgic in those sections that concentrate on everyman's youth.
