Dee and her boyfriend see Dee's past as outdated and a testament to black struggle of the past. They do not consider that Mama and Maggie use the house and its contents in the present. Dee and Hakim-a-barber want to fetishize and even culturally appropriate the things that Mama and Dee use to survive as well as identify with.
