I reviewed the paragraphs. We can assert that Mama has no illusions about who she or Dee is. Mama has a brief moment of fantasy when she reunites with Dee on the Johnny Carson Show but that is just fantasy. In the next paragraph she confides that ,

In real life I am a large, big boned woman with rough, man.working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and overalls during the day. I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man.

Mama is practical and a reliable narrator. She tells us her reality without any apologies or hyperbole. Mama does what she needs to provide for herself and Maggie. Any wit or academic intelligence belongs to Dee but there is a sincerity in Mama's tone that makes her unique and authentic.
