Explain the following example of figurative language:

"when dee read to us, she washed us in a river of make-believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn't necessarily need to know."

This is a metaphor. The change in Dee and the way she treated her family as she became more and more educated didn't make Mama proud, it frightened her. Dee's edication was likened to something volatile and danerous, like the fire that destroyed their first home.
