In Chapter Three the author is foreshadowing coming events. Mattie is in a precarious situation, and Zeena is beginning to react. Ethan, on the other hand, seems oblivious to the catastrophe that is brewing.

In Chapter Four, Ethan continues to live in a fantasy world... a world of regrets, seemingly filled with sadness and a lack of choices. As the chapter concludes, the author apprises us of Ethan's greatest flaw... the desire to have what he cannot attain.
