The story is set in the fictional town of Starkfield, Massachusetts in the late 1800's or early 1900's. The people are generally rural and the lifestyle that Wharton describes has a very rural isolated feel to it. The people she describes are very much victims of circumstance as they are victims of their natural surroundings.
