To distract Esperanza, Hortensia tells the story of how, when she was small, they had to hide from some bandits who broke into the house. All three of them (Miguel, Hortensia, and Esperanza) Esperanza felt a pin poke and made a noise. Miguel however had a mouse in his pocket and let it out so the bandits thought the noise came from the mouse. Esperanza's father wanted to give Miguel something as a reward for protecting his daughter.
