Why have people abandoned the practice of celebrating birthdays? What is the significance?

From the text:

But nobody told birthdays. It was childish. It was what landsiders did. Cakes and silly customs.

From this, we can infer that children were not supposed to feel special.... that they're forced to grow up too quickly.
