Emma

In "Emma" there are some " appropriate" and " inappropriate" marriages. Talk about that mentioning Austen's opinion concerning this.

Marriage was one of the few ways that women could make a change in their lives both in the novel and in Jane Austen's time. It was also a possible way to change one's social status - if one married "up," there was more wealth in the family and it might help the family of the woman. Marriage was not only about love; it was also about making sure that the social needs of the bride and her family were balanced by the possibility that love could occur but it was secondary.
