Poem #43 in Emily Dicikinson's Part One: Life, "The Railway Train" or "I like to see it lap the miles" she discusses the then-modern railway train. "Adopting a childlike wonder and enthusiasm, Dickinson plays with the metaphor of the train as an "iron horse." In her day, the similarities would have had a vividness and an immediacy that have been lost in ours." The term "iron horse" was commonly usd to describe railway trains during Emily's time.
