    Who was Emile and what was his importance in Rousseau's life?

    Emile was Rousseau's hypothetical child whom he teaches as a mentor in the book. Through Emile, Rousseau has told the reader about the ways in which a child should be reared. Instead of incorporating the facts, teachers and parents should impart knowledge through practicals in their students. He teaches different lessons to Emile in each phase of his life. During his childhood, he teaches him through flying kites. Emile learns about religion during his adolescence.

    Rousseau wanted to reform the education system along with hid society. He wanted to eradicate the corruption from his society and for this purpose he wanted to make individuals aware of their duties towards society. Emile gets moral education along with worldly skills and becomes aware of the evils of society. Rousseau impart virtues in him which urge him to become a responsible individual.

    Sophie demonstrates Rousseau's views about women. He considers women as passive individuals whose sole purpose in life is to please their men. Sophie is confined to her home and her family and she lives a devoted life towards Emile.

    According to Rousseau, Sophie doesn't need to get education like Emile. He seems to be biased against women and considers them as inferior to men. The whole book is about imparting skills and morals in Emile while a few chapters have been written upon Sophie. She has been discussed regarding her relationship with Emile; she becomes a fiance and the only education that she needs to get is about her home and her husband. She is not described as a courageous woman instead she is weak, timid, and devoted towards Emile and her family.
