The Young Unitarian appears towards the end of the story. He rides near the Federals, fearless of any danger. When Matasiete pulls him from the horse, the young Unitarian begins a progression of anger: "throwing a look of fire on those fierce men." When the Judge subjects him to interrogation and wants to humiliate him by stripping him naked, the young man reaches such a high level of anger that he ends up dying. According to critics, it is evident that the character of the young Unitarian represents the Young Generation of Romanticism, of which Esteban Echeverría was a part, and which was persecuted by Juan Manuel de Rosas.
