n "El matadero", Esteban Echeverría makes a social and political denunciation. But to understand this it is essential to know some historical circumstances of the moment in which the story is written. In those years, in Argentina there were two political parties with very different ideas: the Unitarian Party and the Federal Party. The Unitarians want a centralized government to be established in the city of Buenos Aires, while the federals want a national order in which the provinces enjoy a level playing field, sovereignty and independence. This difference in perspective on how the country should be organized motivates major clashes between the two groups.

Esteban Echeverría is of unitary ideology. At the time he writes "El matadero", Juan Manuel de Rosas is the governor of the province of Buenos Aires. Rosas belongs to the Federal Party and in 1835, already as governor, he assumes "the sum of public power". This represents the decline of the Unitary Party and the intellectual reaction of its members. "The Slaughterhouse" is a critique of "Rosismo" and reflects not only ideological differences, but also the social differences that exist between Unitarians and Federalists. At the same time, it is a text denouncing the excesses of the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas with respect to its opponents. It should be noted that one of the reasons why Echeverría decides not to publish the work in life is associated with the danger of doing so within the framework of the persecution of opponents installed by Rosas.
