The first chapter of Book 2 has a traditional sci-fi battle with ships and big explosions, the only one in the book (the final battle is portrayed as Fremen fighters breaching the Emperor's stronghold).
However, the fight is viewed from a distance and described poetically, so Herbert still distances himself from the "hard tech" style that has come to dominate the science fiction genre.
