Lanyon is a man of strict science. He obeys the laws of nature and studies material things. Jekyll is interested to go beyond rational science. He thinks there are almost metaphysical places beyond the rational and the explained. Jekyll wants to explore the world of what he calls 'transcendental medicine'. Lanyon calls this 'scientific balderdash.' '
