I've never been convinced that Jekyll had MPD in the clinical sense of the term. The doctor actually physically turned into another person, Mr. Hyde, rather than staying Jekyll while thinking he was somebody else. It can be argued that Hyde was Jekyll's alter ego but I'm not sure this qualifies as MPD. As for how it is diagnosed today, you will have to look that up.
