how does stevenson creat an atmosphere of mystery and suspense in the novel

I think the mystery behind Mr. Hyde fuels much of the suspense. Hyde's connection with Dr. Jekyll becomes increasingly evident but the reader is never sure just how they fit together until the end of the story.
