In Chapter Nine, we become aware that Lanyon's silence regarding Jekyll's work, as well as the great chasm between the two men, reflects how intensely he rejected Jekyll's work. We are aware of the fact that Lanyon has not spoken to Jekyll for a long time because of their disagreement over "unscientific balderdash." We also learn that Lanyon had never heard of Hyde, and their disagreement was based on Jekyll's pursual of mystical science. Having been proved wrong, Lanyon refused to accept or acknowledge any kind of scientific achievement or research that was contrary to his own perspective. So offensive is the shock of Jekyll's work, that Lanyon is affected physically. He grows weak, internalizes his pain, protects the truth, and eventually dies as a result of the shock of witnessing Hyde's transformation into Jekyll.
